The founders of Brooklyn Flea, New York City’s outdoor market of independent food and merchandise vendors, have announced plans to open a similar concept venue in the greater U Street historic district of Washington, DC. The District Flea will launch September 14, and be open for six consecutive Saturdays. It will feature antique and repurposed furniture, vintage clothing, collectibles and antiques, as well as a tightly curated selection of jewelry, art, and crafts by artisans from in and around DC, New York, Baltimore and Philly. Fresh food vendors also will be on hand. District Flea will launch on about 37,000 square feet of a vacant lot at 945 Florida Avenue on a site that is part of the Atlantic Plumbing apartment project planned by Bethesda-based developer JBG Cos.
Co-founders Jonathan Butler and Eric Demby have begun signing local vendors but are still on the hunt for others. Vendor prices are $100 per day or $125 per day for cooked food, including electricity. All spaces are 10-feet by10-feet, unless noted otherwise. A double space, 10-feet by 20-feet, is $175. Since April 2008, Butler, founder of the Brownstoner blog, and Demby, former communications director for Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, have operated the Brooklyn Flea in Fort Greene, NY, on Saturdays, and in Williamsburg, on Sundays. In June, 2013, the Brooklyn Flea launched a new weekly market with 100 vendors in Philadelphia at The Piazza in Northern Liberties.
